Not many people will know what “Ananas Comosus” is in scientific terms, but  in layman’s term, it is the ever popular pineapple.

The juicy, bright yellow fruit is a favourite for desserts or just a snack for many.

Now, the small town of Gopeng which is 20minutes from Ipoh, is known for the Gua Tempurang, white water rafting, hiking, exploring historical locations like the nearby Kellie’s Castle and surrounding greenery.

Now, visitors to the quaint town can also enjoy the taste of their home grown pineapples.

The brand dubbed “Gopine” is derived from the words Gopeng and pineapple.

The pineapples are grown on a 1,000 acre plantation here. Although only 250 acres is reported to be planted, there is more potential to expand production to meet market needs.

The project is undertaken by Gopeng Berhad.

The farm which is among the biggest in the Northern region of Malaysia plants the MD2 pineapple variety and caters for the local market.

Normally takes around 14 to 18 months for the pineapple to mature and be ready for harvest.

Ipoh Hyperlocal congratulates Gopine for the pioneering project to make pineapples the product of small-town Gopeng.
