Perak recorded 6,619 commercial crime cases with a total loss of RM68.5 million from January to July this year.
Although there is a reduction of cases during the same period last year, online fraud remains the biggest problem.
Statistics revealed a total of 1,407 online cheating incidents were recorded with losses up to RM55. 3 million.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Saarani Mohamad who was represented by State Communication, Multimedia and NGO Committee Chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi provided the details in his text at the opening of the two day Perak Level National Anti-Scam Tour Programme here on Nov 12.
Among the cheating cases included e-commerce, telecommunication fraud, love scam and non existence investments.
Love scam crime had a serious impact on women between the ages of 41 and 50 years old.
“We are worried that the syndicate is targeting the ) younger generation with job scams and non-existent loans schemes by using social media as a manipulation platform.
“The public must be exposed to these tactics as a warning sign often seen on scam messages like requesting for personal information and offers with lucrative returns which is too good to be true,” he added.
It is hoped that the programme will achieve its objective as it is not only a platform on education but also inculcate awareness on methods to protect the personal data, information, privacy when using technology to avoid falling victims to scam.
Several sessions were held by speakers for participants on avoiding pitfalls and methods to build a wall to block scams or fall for tactics.
