What a great honour for Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No 5 or TT5 Dredge in Tanjung Tualang near Ipoh in Perak.
The iconic dredge has been awarded by the “Engineering Heritage Award” by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) United Kingdom.
This makes the 85-year-old TT5 the first recipient in Malaysia and also in Southeast Asia.
TT5 is under the purview of Menteri Besar Incorporated.
Mr Eur Ing Phil Peel, president of IMechE from the UK was present personally to hand over the special award.
Perak Menteri Besar Dato Saarani Mohamad said that the recognition from an international professional body was a great honour to the state of Perak.
“The presence of an “engineering marvel” in Tanjung Tualang in Perak reflects pride in the production of tin, which was once the backbone of Malaysia’s economy.
“To further ensure the preservation of the TT5, the state government has mandated MB Inc to continue in the maintaining the heritage structure,”said Saarani.
TT5 is known to be the only working dredge in the world and is currently being promoted as a tourism product in the state.
