The Ipoh City Council signed another Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with its strategic partner, Kitaran Tetra Pak (M) Sdn Bhd to expand the Circular Economy, with the objective to reuse and regeneration of materials or products especially as a means of continuing production in a sustainable or environmentally friendly and minimise waste on July 25.
The company had started the collection and recycling of packet drinks, since September 8, 2023.
A total of nine programmes roping in public and students were organised with the collection of 100kg of packets for recycling purposes.
Ipoh City Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin @MdDaud who signed the MoU on behalf of the council said: “The latest target is to involve all 153 schools under the council’s jurisdiction with the cooperation of the State Education Department and the North Kinta District Education office.
“For a start we have invited 40 primary schools to participate in the Projek ‘CAREton’ to increase the collection of packet drinks and also create awareness to preserve and conserve the environment among pupils.
“The council targets six years until 2030 to achieve the Low Carbon vision of 45 percent through circular economy activities,” he added.
Tetra Pak was represented by its Director of Sustainability, Ms Terrynz Tan to ink the MoU.
Until June 2024, a total of 5895.2 metric tonnes of all kinds of recyclable products have been collected and reduced the carbon footprint to 3423.1 metric tonnes CO2e.
Earlier the council had signed MoU with four other companies for the same purpose.
