Some 2,600 Ipoh City Council staff and Ipoh residents participated in a mega cleanup event in conjunction with the World Clean-up Day at Dataran Bandaraya on September 28 with focus on cleaning areas, drains, sweeping, trimming trees and other cleanliness tasks.
The event was attended by Ipoh City Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin@Md Daud, Ipoh City Council Secretary Ahmad Munir Ishak, councillors and heads of departments.
The United Nations has set September 20 yearly as World Clean-Up Day which is an effort globally to increase awareness on public cleanliness among the community.
It is based on the concept of gotong royong which is implemented nationwide on a mega scale including cleanup of surrounding areas, implementation of recycling campaigns, awareness of the importance of using single use plastic bags.
Rumaizi said:”it is hoped the council’s efforts in conjunction with World Clean-Up Day will ensure the vision of Smart and Green City in 2030 will be achieved.
“Until August this year the council had implemented 49 gotong royong programmes with the involvement of councillors and other institutions.
“The council through its recycle initiative had collected 417.6 tonnes of used cooking oil which resulted in 7.202 tonnes in reduction of CO2 carbon emission in 2023 and 2024.
“From 2021 to 2024, it collected 323.72 tonnes of e-waste products which resulted in a reduction of 281.63 tonnes of CO2 carbon emissions”, shared Rumaizi.
