Ipoh Doughnut Economics Programme based on Donat Economy Action Lab (DEAL) nine principles had been recognised internationally after it won the 2024 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for its efforts to transform Ipoh into a regenerative “Doughnut City” focused on health, environment and sustainable development.
This is the third time Malaysia has received the award.
Ipoh City Council is again part of the project launched with a partnership between Sunway University’s Sunway and Centre for Planetary Health (SCPH), Institut Darul Ridzuan (IDR) and People of Remarkable Talent (PORT).
It was launched in March 2023 with a grant from Yayasan Hasanah.
The award recognising excellence in urban development will be presented at the “Beyond the 2030 Agenda” event in Queretaro, Mexico to be held from October 8 to 10.
Ipoh City Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin@Md Daud and Ipoh Doughnut Economic City (iDEC) CEO Dr Zulqarnain Mohamad are expected to receive the award on behalf of the project.
Rumaizi said:”the significance of this achievement lies not just in the award itself, but in the validation of our shared commitment to transforming Ipoh into a sustainable, inclusive and resilient city.
“It reflects the powerful impact of applying the Doughnut Economics model, which integrates economic, social and environmental dimensions to achieve a balanced and sustainable development pathway.
“While Ipoh City Council had led the project managing the groundwork and establishing the foundation for the Ipoh Doughnut Economics initiative, Sunway University also has proudly as the key knowledge partner and takes great pride in this achievement,” he added.
The mayor extends his sincere thanks to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming for their invaluable support and contributions.
In line with the goals of Flagship 15 of the Perak Prosperous Plan 2030, Ipoh City Council reaffirms its commitment to strengthening collaboration with stakeholders to build a resilient, healthy and sustainable Ipoh.
Ipoh aspires to set a pioneering example of other cities in Malaysia and ASEAN in adopting regenerative and sustainable urban development models.
