It was a world wide recognition when Ipoh City Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin@Md Daud represented Ipoh City Council to receive the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award “Beyond the 2030 Agenda” at Queretaro, Mexico on Monday.
The presentation was made during the World Habitat Day celebrations.
Rumaizi was also appointed as one of the panelists at the event.
The doughnut initiative based on seven principles of Deal Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) won the award in August 2024.
The council are among the five recipients, the others being Ville de Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco, and Alcaldia de Santiago de Cali, Cali, Colombia Allen Kong, Ocean Grove, Australia and David Satterthwaite, London, United Kingdom.
The honour is in recognition of efforts to make Ipoh as regenerative “Doughnut City”
which focuses on health, environment and sustainable development.
Rumaizi in a statement said:”through the Doughnut Economic Action Plan, I hope to expand this model to all the districts in Perak as an example to all cities in the country and Asia.
“It is hoped that all parties will cooperate to build a resilient, inclusive and sustainable future,” he added.
The initiative was launched in March 2023 with a grant from Yayasan Hasanah.
The project is a cooperation between Pusat Kesihatan Planetary Sunway Universiti (SCPH), Institut Darul Ridzuan (IDR), People of Remarkable Talent ( PORT) and Ipoh City Council.
