With the target to spur the gastronomy economy , Ipoh City Council had set a target of at least 50 percent of its eatries to obtain grade “A” certification this year.

Ipoh City Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin@Md Daud said: “this is part of the council’s preparations among the food outlet traders in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

“Last year only 982 premises qualified to receive grade A certification out of the 3,200 eateries, which is 30 percent of the outlets checked.

“Grading is based on cleanliness of premises and toilets apart from medical documentation of food handlers,” he told reporters in a statement after officiating the opening of Feng Cha Cafe at Canning 2 Commercial Centre here yesterday (January 18).

He also pointed out a total of 1,689 toilets at eateries were checked out of which 1,670 were given four star certification.

The remaining 19 toilets had received three stars and the premises were issued warning letters and compounds.

Their business licenses will not be renewed  this year until the premises take the necessary steps to achieve the four star rating.
