The Perak government is catching up with Penang, Langkawi and Malacca to start charging guests RM3 “local service charge” per night or CPT effective Jan 1, 2025.

It will apply for all hotels and homestays.

Although Penang charges “Hotel Fee” or “Local Government Fee” for guests, in Langkawi it is the “Langkawi Tourism Tax” ranging from RM1 – RM9 depending on the stat status of the hotel and in Malacca, it is the Heritage Tax at RM2 per night.

They have been charging this form of fees on locals and foreign tourists for years, Perak is a late starter.

However, the Perak version is a flat rate at RM3 for budget hotels and 5- star hotels.

The announcement was made by the State Housing and Local Government Committee chairperson Sandrea Ng said the new charge would be applied to each room per night and is stipulated under the Hotel Enactment 2023 that the state assembly passed last year.
