Several secondary and primary schools were recognised for their participation in a Circular Economy two minute video clip competition.

Another category known as the “Most Viewed Video” on YouTube was also held.

The event was held at the Ipoh Convention Centre attended by Ipoh City Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah on June 19.

The contest was organised by Ipoh City Council (MBI) which also signed a MoU for another two years with three strategic partners Biovisma Sdn Bhd, Edsha Solutions Sdn Bhd and Thowlee Recycle Sdn Bhd to strengthen the Circular Economy.

The contest is aimed at raising awareness and understanding on the concept of Circular Economy among students. Also to stress the importance of restoration of resources through reuse and waste prevention.

To support the Housing and Local Government Ministry agenda of transformation of management of solid waste based on Circular Economy.

A total of 11 primary and nine secondary schools in Kinta Utara district took part in the competition held from March 1 to April 15.

In the video clip category for secondary schools, SMK Raja Perempuan (RPS) emerged winner by taking back RM1,000 and an appreciation certificate.

SMK Wira Jaya came in second and took RM750 and certificate while SMK Rapat Setia captured third spot to receive RM500 and certificate.

SK Methodist ACS Ipoh was named the top school in the primary category. They too received RM1,000 and a certificate.

Runners up position went to SK Marian Convent who was presented with RM750 and certificate.

SK Tanah Hitam finished third to receive RM500 and a certificate.

In the Most Viewed Video category on YouTube for secondary schools, SMK Wira Jaya topped with RM300 and certificate. Followed by SMJK Poi Lam who took RM200 and certificate with SMK Menglembu in third place.They received RM150 and certificate.

Consolation prizes of RM250 were also given to other schools who participated in the competition.

The videos display Circular Economy activities which support environmental conservation and preservation .

Meanwhile Ipoh City Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah who presented the prizes to winners  in his address said: “As a local authority the council is committed to implement various Circular Economy initiatives.

“This includes building of brownfield, waste to wealth, trash for cash and eco tourism,” he added.

According to him a total of 12,059 activities and programmes were organised resulting in collection of 9,092 metric tonnes of waste and reduction of carbon amounting to 5,121.22 metric tonnes CO2 equivalent.
