Teluk Intan river

Tourism in Perak is not only flourishing in its capital city of Ipoh but also in the second tier towns of the state.

The most visible among them is Teluk Intan or Teluk Anson which is located south of Ipoh and some 94km away.

The mere mention of Teluk Intan evokes memories of the iconic leaning tower in the likes of the Tower of Pisa in Italy.

In the early days, the massive river which meanders along the town used to overflow its banks frequently but now, thanks to modern infrastructure upgrade, the problem has been overcomed.

The town is also surrounded by various oil palm plantations in the surroundings. Among the big names is the United Plantations Berhad or UP.

Fast forward, the town’s tourism industry is also boosted by the launch of the self guided heritage trail which serves to direct you to the places of interest.

Among them is the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan located in the heart of the city built in 1885.

To the contrary, it was built by a local businessman. The pagoda-like features houses a clock and was a water reservoir in the early days.

Then there is the old police station built in 1882 which was used by the British and later by the Japanese. Next, is the old court house which was built in 1891. Then there is the old cannon which was found by a farmer.

Several places of worship are also included in the heritage trail, like the Church of St Luke the Evangelist, Indian Muslim Mosque, Hock Soon Keong Temple, Sri Thendayuthapani temple and more.

The booklet was put together by project manager, Maniam Sinnasamy and his team who are passionate about the town’s history and heritage.
